Wonderful piece. How have I missed this movie? “Always go to the end of your movement” is great advice for writers, too—although I’d add “and not a word longer.”

I find it interesting how Anne Boleyn has become one of the more fascinating people in history. That women fight to represent her. I think she has been terribly maligned in history until recently. I feel that it was her strength that was her undoing because of the times she lived in, and the callous people who inhabited her circle.

Thank you for this very interesting post.

“But there seems to be something timeless about Genevieve Bujold’s Anne Boleyn.”

There are few actors that I will gush about, but after working with Genevieve on Dead Ringers in 1988, I can say this about her performances; they are exceptionally raw and emotionally incandescent. She does not mask or perform. She becomes.

I loved this movie. Claire Foy's performance as Anne Boleyn in "Wolf Hall" was also excellent.

Yes she was. She did an especially great job in the execution scene. Probably the best execution scene of all the Anne movies and tv series.

Hi Ms. Bordo. "And utterly without historical foundation." What conflicts with history? Not pickin' a fight (would never do that with you, Ms. Bordo) but I'm crazy about the movie. Isn't it all accurate?

Aw I’m sorry!! Some of it is true, but that tower scene never happened. As you know, though, I’m crazy about the movie too! So what if it didn’t happen? It SHOULD have happened.

Well not to belabor this but is there PROOF it didn't happen and if not COULDN'T it have happened? BTW I am referring to Ann of a Thousand Days I read your post fast while working

Well, Kingston wrote every visitor down, and Anne’s ladies-in-waiting reported everything to him, too. I’ve read ALL the documents from the era when I was writing my book, and there’s no mention anywhere of Henry going to see Anne in the Tower.

Couldn't Henry have said you record this and it's your head? : ) Thank you Ms. Bordo you are the expert I just requested your book at the library and can't wait

So glad you ordered the book!

In theory, Henry COULD have, but he was off with Jane Seymour and mostly interested in pretending Anne never even existed. He was like Trump. You’re In his circle one moment, and then—if you do anything that he construes as betrayal—you’re not. And when you’re not, look out.
