Thank you for this. I've not read Happening nor seen the film. Now I will. I read Ernaux when you could only get her in French - short diary books. When she first won the Nobel, and I talked to women about it, it seemed to me they would not appreciate (not understand) why her books are so valuable and important. Many cannnot get themselves to identify - and there are problems in identifying.
