To my dear subscribers (this post is only going out to you):
My substack is just a month and a half old, and I’m enjoying this new platform for my writing enormously—and am so grateful to the hundreds of you who subscribed while it’s in its “infancy.”
As you’ve no doubt noticed, this newsletter (like my career as the author of books) is a many-legged, always-roaming-the-culture beast. And now that it’s been going for awhile, I’m eager to know how I can make BordoLines what you’d like it to be:
What kinds of pieces you’d like more of and/or what you can do without
Whether I’m flooding your mailboxes with too much, or whether you like having the pieces there “on the shelf” to read as desired.
Are you put off by long pieces (like my posts on “1883.” “Goodbye, Postfeminism,” and my Oscars Edition)?
Do you want more, briefer commentary on political events as they happen?
More movies and television?
More politics?
More Anne Boleyn?
More memoir and other creative non-fiction?
How do you feel about my posting pieces that have appeared elsewhere but perhaps deserve a second life?
If you’re subscribed because you’re already familiar with my books and/or published articles, were you hoping to see me continue commenting on something in particular?
Any and all feedback would be much appreciated!
And please do spread the word about BordoLines as widely as you can. I didn’t have a hefty email list (actually I had no list at all) to send Substack—I’ve had to be my own advertiser on Facebook and Twitter. So please excuse annoying pleas for sharing and subscribing. It’s the only way I can get the word out, and would be very, very grateful for any help you can provide.
In friendship and with hugs—Susan
Hi Susan, I’m not sure you received my email reply to your question about Substack’s features. I’m pasting it below. Feel free to follow up with me via my email address: PoeticSurprise[at]gmail
Substack offers a lot of helpful features to enhance our posts. Before the piece is posted you can go to the top and select "buttons" to insert the "subscribe" and "share" buttons.
If you want to customize a button you can select "customize" and then insert the name for the button. The only tricky part here is figuring out the hyperlink. To get this just create a generic "subscribe" button through the same "buttons" feature. Then copy that web address and use it for your custom button.
If you want to highlight a passage to capture readers attention, you can select the quotation icon near the top, to the right of the headphones icon .
If you want to highlight a quote and change the font size, begin by doing the above step, then highlight it with your cursor and then click "style." There you'll be given different options to alter the size of the text that is highlighted.
If there's anything else in particular that you're interested in doing that you saw in my post let me know and I'll see about explaining how to do it.
I have thoroughly enjoyed your movie reviews. Reviews of anything popular culture are a big hit with me. Has anybody else seen "To Leslie"? Now there's a performance.
