Congrats on reaching 1000! How long did that take? As for forgotten gems, I was going to tell my kids that they should watch REDS, and my son said: Yeah, John Malkovich is great in that. I just shook my head before trying to explain the difference a single letter can make. But still, what a great movie.

Haha. Your son was thinking of “Red,” right? My daughter loves that one too, and has never seen “Reds”—which I agree is a gem. I must add it!! I must have seen it a dozen or more times. Re 1000, I started at the end of January. I had no email list. I worked like crazy to spread posts around to Facebook groups that I thought might appreciate them. That’s basically where I got most of my subscribers. Lately there has been some attention from “Notes.” But that was slow in coming.

I haven't been pushing it a lot on the different groups available because I always forget about that option. I'm going to have to star paying more attention. I don't have a big following on Facebook, because it's too much of a distraction.

FB has been my main community for a long time, so it’s come naturally to me to announce and share posts. But I hate hustling for subs, and I pledged to myself that when I hit 1K I’d stop doing it. I’ll still spread the word around a bit to relevant groups, but I’m not going to invest a lot of time in that anymore. With so many people doing newsletters now, getting subs is an uphill battle anyway. I’m happy to write just for my 1002 pals.

I get that. I told myself I wasn't going to go paid until I hit 1000. I also told myself I would leave my Short Stories After 8 free. That way, if they don't want to pay for whatever serial piece I have going, they'll still be able to read my stories.

Hi Susan,

Thanks for these recommendations.

I'm totally unfamiliar with In the Cut and Don't Look Back. They both sound great and are on deck.

We just watched tonight "Fair Play," which my wife and I thought was good. It just came out on Netflix. Two very compelling actors play a couple who work at the same hedge fund. It's a gritty movie that deals with women in the financial workplace.

And congrats on reaching your target and focusing on the important things, including helping me find compelling things to watch!

Best,

David

Thank you! I’m definitely going to check out “Fair Play.” You’re probably the 10th person who has recommended it to me. Hope you like “In the Cut” and “Don’t Look Back.” They are pretty unsettling. Better be in a sturdy mood!

I've seen all of the movies you highlighted except "Don't Look Back" and "In the Cut". The ones that I watched I loved and am newly inspired to rewatch after so many years. First on the list the French Lieutenant's Woman" and "Midnight in Paris". (How can such a shitty human direct such good movies?) But what about "Out of Africa"? If you ask me my favorite book, food, song, writer, poet, painter I couldn't pick just one but ask me my favorite movie and it's no question "Out of Africa". Streep and Redford at their peak, the outstanding cinematography, musical score, acting, story, it's the whole enchilada for me. And by the way, congrats on hitting 1000!

I agree that “Out of Africa” is wonderful. Could easily go on my list. (I may have to do a new movie kedgeree every couple of weeks.) And the music!! I have the soundtrack on my iPad and listen all the time. The two of them in his plane! The tiger scene! So many incredible moments.
