I feel that these antisemitic forces win when they invade our brain. I am focusing on what matter to me, what makes us humane, and not what they want us to focus on. They want us to engage in their libelous propaganda by trying to refute it. But resistance is more that this refutation, it is going on with your life and ignoring their miserable deprivation as human beings.

It’s hard, though, when a big chunk of your life is writing about contemporary events, media, etc.!

I totally understand, and my idealism might be unrealistic, but I don’t want them to win. We are more than what they want to reduce us to. We survived and will survive because of our resilience and appreciation of life, not its destruction. Fighting for life, not martyrdom.

Ilana, I feel the sane way in terms of not allowing the protesters, so ignorant and so immature (like teenagers!), to halt me. I try to understand that protesting appears to them as a chance to be in the spotlight, feel important, have some fun, have stories to tell, and perhaps develop solidarity relationships, romantic or otherwise.

Just like the legendary protester of the 1960s. Of course the big difference is that the cause of the 1960s was to stop a war not to hurl invective and threats at a people.

I hate the fact of the protests, but I find that putting it into a perspective somewhere between condescension and contempt helps me dispel them from my mind.

I'm focused instead on what seems to be a tightening noose around the necks of the regime in Iran and its proxies. The failure of the Iranian missile attack may be remembered as the most important event of 2024 in the Middle East.

On the other hand, as Susan says, her remit is to assess events precisely like the protests as well as review relevant shows like "They Were The Lucky Ones" And I benefit from reading her POV.

I'm waiting to binge "They Were The Lucky Ones" once all episodes are available to me. I believe that's May 3rd.

I get it. For me in moments of such despair I focus on our people and our strength in solidarity. My 25 year old niece is turning her back on our heritage because she does not want to be associated with being Jewish amongst her peers. This is the hardest thing for me right now. My friend’s brother was assaulted with a pellet gun while crossing a street on the upper west side of Manhattan and her daughter is a student at Columbia (thankfully studying abroad in Spain this year) and I’m currently trying to get my non Jewish husband to understand why i’m feeling the way i’m feeling right now; angry, misunderstood, betrayed, frustrated. I just started following Nice Jewish Runners on Instagram (a platform I had deleted off my phone after October 7th) and they make me feel proud, welcome, united. We have to stand together and live our best lives which, I believe, is one of the best ways to combat those who hate us.

Absolutely. And I’ve discovered, through my stack, so many who (like you) “get it.” It’s a great thing about the opportunity to share through writing. And it seems to me that more and more substack writers are “coming out” in solidarity.

Take care and glad you will be back.

A break is necessary from the biased coverage of the trust fund jihadists.

Msm still won't go there (what does Hamas want? What does freedom look like when Islamists are in charge? Who else will they convert or kill?) from what I've seen and it's a huge part of the problem.

The focus becomes on questioning Israel's history, claims, land, people, practices...and it's outrageously antisemitic.

In this case Israel and the Jews are symbolically being scapegoated to keep a mass delusion alive...the delusion that Intifada isn't against them, too.

The delusion that "this has nothing to do with religion so how dare you suggest it does!?"

To face that is to face real terror, real threat, a new arena where virtue signaling doesn't cut it and only adherence to sharia law does.

Today a keffiyah, tomorrow a burka.

So they aim their bullhorns at the Jews and it's fucking despicable.

The truth will out, though.

Hang in there. 💐🫒🍇🇮🇱

Thank you ❤️. I’ve wanted to watch We Were the Lucky Ones but every time I look at the trailer, it looks like a glossy love story set against the backdrop of the Holocaust, which sickens me. And also because the story of the majority of Jews, who weren’t wealthy, is once again not being shown and thereby feeding into the anti-Semitic tripe of Jews being class oppressors. I love this post and your perspective and would value your thinking about the show.

I will write more about it eventually. It’s not my kind of show, either. Among other things, too sweeping, too dramatic soundtrack, and hard to keep the characters apart. I loved “The New Look” and thought “Manhunt” a much better show than “We Were the Lucky Ones.” But it isn’t a glossy love story (I haven’t seen the trailer, but am not surprised if it’s advertised as such, especially in the current climate) and it actually taught me a lot of stuff I didn’t know. As to the Kurc’s wealth, that becomes less and less relevant as the series goes on. It struck me at the beginning too. Like, wow, what a huge apartment! My Polish relatives (mother’s side) lived in a hut! But there were other aspects of it that I could relate to personally.

The New Look, yes, and such wonderful filmmaking. I haven’t heard of Manhunt and will look it up, thanks!

This war is so difficult for so many. I have Jewish friends and Muslim friends. I have friends who knew those who lost their lives on October 7 during Hamas’s deadly attack and kidnappings. I have friends from Gaza who have lost hundreds of their family members among the 34,000 or so dead and the 10,000 or so missing there. Some of my Jewish friends are demonstrating for a Ceasefire. Some are not. I just hope that people can maintain a sense of the humanity in those they oppose. I have no faith in Netanyahu’s government which seems corrupt and guided by the ultra-right who dehumanize the Palestinians and minimize their deaths. According to some of my friends, Netanyahu might just be biding his time until Trump wins the election. Then there will be no debate about their actions. Trump’s win brings its own kind of horrifying thoughts. But increasingly Biden may lose the election in part due to opposition to his policies regarding this war. Nothing new in my comment, just musing about the tragic present moment.

Susan, I realize you are liberal so don't listen to FOX or Max News, or maybe not even i24 News, but they have been much better when it comes to coverage about Israel and the campus hitler youth protests calling directly or indirectly for more Jews to die than died on October 7th. Barely at all a mention of the hostages or negative info about brutal and fascist hamassholes, who not only kill Jews but also Palestinians who oppose them. Jews, white and black, have been and remain the most oppressed and marginalized people in the world. To call us white and place us in the oppressor and colonialist block is a joke, hitler is laughing in his grave.

I’ve been enjoying “Northern Exposure” on Prime. It is a wonderful relief. I had forgotten the wonderful music !

Regarding the pic, congrats Susan, you found a nut. You can relax, however. The local protesters I know are old-time, stalwart progressives. They are devoted Democrats. They are shocked, almost disbelieving, at being called antisemites.

Where do you live that you have such nice protestors? Lots of other “progressives” are threatening to sit out the election. Just like they did in 2016. I won’t relax until after the election. I know too well the damage that can be done.

I live in super nice-ville : ) Something that's not reported is students are being joined by these old-style lefties. They are there for one reason: Stop the humanitarian crisis.

Also to your point Susan, yes, this could affect the election. These people feel betrayed. That both parties stand together is something they can not get over. They'll stay home. If this gets any bigger that could throw the election to Trump.
