Same here. I thought I would be jumping for joy. Instead, I just feel numb. At one time I , too, was a news junkie. And good lord, after November 2016, I would grab my phone before I was fully awake as soon as I opened my eyes, and check CNN for any hopefully, more uplifting news. (Just sure that someone would figure out how to undo this travesty.)

If I was in the car, Sirius radio was ALWAYS tuned into MSNBC or CNN. I was a member of every Hillary or Democrat group on Facebook.

Now I don't pay a lot of attention to it. I have been disappointed too many times.

Surely the pussy-grabbing statements would kill his campaign.

We thought he was finished with Mueller...but no.

Even after January 6, when even the GOP momentarily turned against him, when I thought for SURE he was toast, he and the GOP were able to spin that into more "witch hunt", "oh, woe is me, no one has ever been so mistreated", feel sorry for Trump nonsense.

THEN as if all of that wasn't bad enough, Roe V Wade was overturned.

I still care, but really have no more hope.

You could be describing my own experience. Probably lots of us. We’re kind of a “silent majority” because the people who get paid for continuing to report about it all literally can’t afford to speak the truth about it. Their game is to hype it all up—which is of course one reason for the roller-coaster ride that Shire speaks of in her comment. They’ve fed this multi-legged beast in so many ways—and will likely never take responsibility for it, or the destructive role they played in the 2016 election.

I feel your pain. The irony of global warming showing just how neglectful we've been right now, the very worst summer of (at least) my entire life - weather-wise, is fitting and really just a lot too much.

Great comments! The air is acceptable so I am going outside. Will respond more later!! In the meantime, thanks for much for turning this howl into a real conversation!

Roller coaster rides used to be fun, the anticipation during the climb, the thrill of the view at the precipice, the scream inducing drop...but when translated to the emotional rollercoaster ride of the past 7 years...no thank you. Numb to the noise, sick to my stomach, never want to go on that ride again.

Good analogy. The damage done to all of us is incalculable.

I am old enough to recall Gerald Ford saying “Our long national nightmare is over.” I wish someone could say that again in the near future, but Trump is a much more malignant force than Nixon ever was.

Expand full comment

Yes. Nixon didn’t alter belief in fact or guard-rail institutions, or cultivate cult thinking or release the racist and sexist ID and whole slew of other changes that have issued from the 2016 disaster. This nightmare will never be over, because of everything that has been undermined. Trump in jail won’t repair all that.

Excellent article. Susan B is one of my favorite writers. For me, --because I don't really get off on Trump going to jail, as long as he goes away, anywhere-- a side issue engendered by all this is that yet again the Constitution is shown to be full of holes and ambiguities: as in, "Can Trump run from jail". "I dunno, can he?"

Thank you, thank you for the “one of my favorite writers” comment. It’s so great to be told, especially now that the mainstream media has shut me out completely (that’s a whole other story, which you may or may not know) and I never get called on for commentary any more. On a less ego-driven note, I’ve been amazed at how much I’ve learned about how fragile our institutions are, and yes, how full of holes and ambiguities the Constitution is. NOT what I learned in school! We really have no effective guard-rails that can’t be pushed aside by power. That lesson has been mind-blowing for me.

I’m with you 100% on this. Through most of my life I was a glass half-full person. Now as I look forward to my 70th birthday, I realize I look at the world through the half-empty lens. But, I do look forward to your thoughts on “The Diplomat.”

I’m glad, because I’m looking forward to writing about it. REALLY looking forward to it. And the air is clear again here, so I can do it on the deck.

The arc of justice turned slowly until Special Counsel Jack Smith took matters in hand. Garland was not the right man for the job, and had he appointed Smith 2 years ago, you would be writing a much different article.

But I know how you feel, and I also share some of those feelings. In the final analysis, however, DJT must be brought to justice because now the world is watching and disillusioned enough with America. We were once an example of democracy for the world and no longer enjoy that reputation, thanks to Trump and the Republican Party that has supported him in his crimes and transgressions against the country. It will take decades to earn back the trust of other nations, assuming it is even possible, but bringing him to account for his crimes is a necessary first step.

I believe our AG would have let him off the hook for the obstruction and insurrection charges, but the documents closed that door because they involved our allies who share intelligence with the US. So I'm glad at the end of the day that Trump's arrogance, stupidity, and sense of entitlement brought about what he faces today.

One final thought: I'm sick and repulsed by his face, voice, and arrogance. Sadly his insane supporters will live on long after he is gone. His cult's profound stupidity, bigotry and tendency toward violence make me ashamed to call them my fellow Americans.

Yes. Good to remember that the rest of the world is watching. And that while nothing can repair the damage he and his lemmings have wrought—and it continues—we CAN’T allow our justice system to fail at this. And we should all be grateful to Biden for how much he’s done to repair our alliances and reputation outside the country.

At last, someone (you) has captured my mood.

I wonder when the wheels really began to come off. Was it Bush v. Gore when the Supreme Court interfered with a state's recount to hand Bush the presidency? Or was it when Nancy Pelosi took impeachment off the table in 2006 after Bush led us into the destructive wars in the Middle East on a foundation of lies?

Whenever it happened, Trump's indictment now strikes me as a media distraction. It comes way too late and features the wrong charges. The DOJ should have charged him first with insurrection to have a hope of keeping him off the ballot in 2024. Alas, now we will be treated to the both-sidesism of the NYTimes and other outlets. Yawn!

Good question, when did the wheels begin to come off? You could tell that story in so many different ways, depending on what you focus on. Would be a good piece to write!! Re. The Times, I’m avoiding them like the plague for the very reason you mention. What obnoxious “balance” game are they playing now? (If you can’t bear recounting, don’t.)

I identify completely with your exhaustion about this. It’s a normal human reaction. Fried clams are health food compared to all the bullshit we’ve had to eat, and I agree with you that even Trump in jail won’t turn it all around. I do hope you keep writing about it, though. At the risk of sounding too flattering to be credible, I read and listen to a mountain of stuff on this, and your stuff is far better than most.

Thank you!! Tell others!!

I'm probably a little bit more like your husband. I really want to see Trump taken down and the "good guys", us, who see him for what he is and what he's done, win. But my fears about our country aren't really centered on Trump anymore, but the Trump-like parasites who have come out of the closet with dreams of replacing him, and all those crazed conspiracy theory acolytes that support them. What really excited me yesterday (well excited might be too strong, gave me hope perhaps) is the Supreme Court decision against Alabama's gerrymandering, and the chance it will help overturn the gerrymandering in other states. That, yes, excites me and gives me hope, far more than the Trump indictment.

Expand full comment

YES! The decision on gerrrymandering was cause for cheers. I agree.

I agree with you, Deborah. I'm also waiting for Trump's voice to (both literally and figuratively via his parasites) disappear, become a bad memory, and shut the f up.

Thank you for (also) questioning the repeated catch-phrase referring to a "sad day for America." Why? Because people that think they're above the law were on the brink of or close to or we were being teased with the possibility of being held accountable for their bending or flouting of laws? Is that why, once we learned that subpoenas meant nothing, endightments are less glamorous then we'd hoped for only a few years of sacrificed sanity ago than we could have known?

I loved the video! Ivannka turned Jared in to save herself?!? 😝

I have felt somewhat inoculated from Trump since Hillary lost in 2016. I gave that election my ALL so I feel like I can not be blamed. And my life is good, so guilt free is an amazing excuse to enjoy it.

I DO glory in the Indictments. Politically The people get what the people want. Legally I need the system to work.

These Indictments are the truth and revenge at the same time.
